What a piece a calamity! SHE was a HE

Posted by Dervin's thoughts On 4:27 AM

"WOIII it sweeet mi" bellowed the woman who was clearly enjoying the met dished to her by her friend while traveling home on a bus that I was so fortunate to be riding in. I was surely intrigued by what i was hearing and cocked my ears to hear the rest, who wouldnt? I left Camperdown a year ago so I was in need of some really juicy sus.

"Suh a weh you do when him tell you dat missis?" She asked drilling the dets from the woman who seemed cautious, hoping no one was hearing, little did she know. Apparently this was a story of a man who dated a woman (lol), only to find out later that she was a he.

So the story begins. From what i understood from the 40minute journey from HWT to Portmore, the man who i'll call Gary had a relationship with this woman, i'll call Andrea (you see what i did there?). The two then became intimate but no sex. The story teller explains that Andrea was always hesitant and 'stand off-ish' when his hand went too low.

"Suh him neva pick up seh supm nuh right deso?" Her friend asked. "or even di bress dem, him neva see seh har chess too sumall?". According to Gary, he thought Andrea was just playing hard to get, i'll accept that. But what about the breasts? He said that Andrea was fat and so it was man boobs that he was always caressing. I'm not too sure about that one. I was fat once and i had man boobs and i could clearly tell the difference between mine and my mom's, but i'll give him the benefit of the doubt, the friend thought the same.

The storyteller who had met Andrea confessed that she was fooled as well. The perfect walk in heels, the high pitched voice, the perfect makeup was all to 'feminine' for a man to do.

"Mi wah seem cause me wah see a how him look mek unu couldnt tell di difference". I dont have to tell you who said that.

So the story continues. Gary really wanted to reach third base, as "him blood did a bwoil", so he planned to surprise Andrea and to seduce her into going that extra mile. Hair all done - let me write exactly what she said.

"mi seh him all do up him hair enuh, suppose yuh see how di man guh aallll out, yuh woulda swear tink a married him ago married"< I WOULD NEVER FORGET THAT LINE.

"yea suh wahmp?"

She continued. Gary planned a surprise visit, he showed up unannounced at Andrea's house. He claimed he saw a man who was the splitting image of one of Andrea's girlfriends. The man looked shocked, Gary grew suspicious, he thought that Andrea was giving him bun. He demanded to know where Andrea was, he responded saying "She inna di baachroom". According to the woman telling the story Gary expressed how 'girly' the man spoke and how he stretch his words.

Gary rushed to the bathroom, opened the door just as the "Andre" was stepping out of the shower.

"Mi seh. Him seh him see one BIG sitn a hang dung"

Men, be careful.

GSAT Reveals Upsetting Truth!

Posted by Dervin's thoughts On 4:35 PM

GSAT results are out! But the findings, aahh not too pleasant. The Ministry of Education revealed that of the 167 High Schools in Jamaica only 50 of them were schools of choice, they also brought to light that some schools were not even selected.

Education Minister Andrew Holness lamented that this is a problem that needs to be fixed and he will try his best to ensure that the remaining schools become schools of choice.

Any reasonable individual can see for themselves that the findings from the GSAT students and of course parents address the state of the education system. It shows that far less than half the schools in the island are considered worthy of attending. But you cant really blame the parents now can you? No one wants their child to attend a school that would 'on the surface' set them up for failure and students dont want to be mocked or frowned at because they're attending a school that is below standard.
Schools maintain these statuses for a number of reasons.

Underqualified and incompetent teachers are abundant in the nontraditional high schools. If you pay attention to the news you'll find yourself scoffing at even the principals, who themselves can't construct a proper, grammatically correct sentence. If this is happening of course it sets up the students and school for failure. The grade average of the school plummets or remains stagnant (for the schools with already low averages), thus dissuading students from wanting to attend. The Ministry of Education should ensure that reliable teachers are employed in all schools and not only ivy league.

Some schools mainly the nontraditional ones are strictly technical, with a curriculum geared towards technical and vocational subjects paving a way for lower end occupations, like hair dressing. Whereas the traditional schools offers subjects that prepare students for prestigious occupations like Law. If this continues to be the case then the ministry cannot expect change. It is also known that some of the nontraditional schools do not have an advanced level, some don't even offer most CSEC subjects and you ask why students dont want to go to these schools? The Ministry must address this problem - all schools should prepare students for the same level jobs and provide them with the same educational opportunities.

A softer approach would  be for the Ministry to advertise these schools as schools worthy of attending. Showcase the achievements of the school, the qualifications of the teachers, safe environment and so on. It works! Look at St. Jago, it was the second preferred school for students who sat the GSAT exam this year. Some would argue that it's their success in the SCQ competition. St. Jago was already a traditional high school, but you see my point.

To achieve immediate results the Ministry should revoke the student choices option placing students into schools randomly, of course bearing in mind the location. This will ensure that there is equal distribution of students in all institutions, eradicating the labels imposed on schools, that is, bright or dunce and providing students with the same educational opportunities.

Positive Vibrations: Dancehall Music

Posted by Dervin's thoughts On 10:29 AM

Positive Vibrations

I recently raised the question to some of my friends and followers on twitter asking if they could think of any positive impacts the Dancehall music has on the society. Many were hesitant in responding for numerous reasons, some instead of giving positive impacts they gave negative, some said that the dancehall music has no positive effects, some gave basic answers like “it’s a stress reliever” and some thought pensively and could yield no answer. It’s quite ironic that the same persons who love the music, the originators of it, have not even an inkling as to the effects their music has. It is necessary to highlight that it is easier to indicate the negatives in the dancehall music. It’s more vivid and it is often discussed on a wider scale. However in a society as hearty as Jamaica, we should not dwell on the negative but embrace the positive.

Our music to some extent, promotes female independence. Look beyond the rae rae and wifey and matey saga or even promiscuity. The entertainers often times seek to promote female power and confidence. Refer to songs released by Lady Saw or more recently Certified Diva by Tami and Tifa. And even men embrace the idea of independence among females, Tony Matterhorn a big contributor.

We must also give credit to Dancehall for being an effective advocate against political oppression. Amidst the restrain and submission inflicted on citizens by actions of government for example tax increases the dancehall music acts as a voice for the people. Reflect on Kartels’ Emergency which touched on the government inactions. Through such an avenue the music highlights struggles faced by the poor, note Poverty by I-Octane

A pure heart is a sermon preached by dancehall entertainers. In it, speaks of grudge and jealousy and hatred against each other, look at Ioctane’s hit Nuh Love Inna Dem which shows the extent to which people will conspire. Dancehall’s doctrine teaches us to be satisfied and be happy and work towards what we desire.

Which leads me to my final point, the Dancehall music promotes endurance, dreaming big and never giving up. This aspect of the music is more vivid and emphasized than the others. Whether it is dreaming to be a successful musician, a millionaire or merely buying a car or a house the music of dancehall is a great motivator towards such goals.

The music however, profoundly dictates violence which is accentuated beyond pleasure. That must be toned down and allow the positive to shine. Do this and expect to see greatness within our society.

Are men expected to cheat?

Posted by Dervin's thoughts On 4:39 PM

Musician Tyrese Gibson a few months ago made the statement in an interview with Wendy Williams that men are expected to cheat, Wendy didnt take the comment too well and immediately blocked Tyrese from explaining what he was trying to say. He did however, blurt out that it's because of men's upbringing and that it's a horrible double standard in the society.

It sparked my interest and hence the reason for this post. First let us fully try to understand the word "expect". Some definitions include
i) Regard (someone) as likely to do or be something
ii) regard something as probable or likely
iii) look forward to the probable occurrence of

So with those three definitions listed I asked myself, do people look forward to the probable occurrence of men cheating? My answer is yes. It is evident almost everywhere you go, you see it on the internet, hear it in the music and of course the convos among females or the boastful "who got more" by men.

When we say 'expected' it doesnt mean that they must or will, as you can see from the definitions listed above. It is therefore the impression one gets from the society and the lessons it has taught that men are more likely to cheat than women, fueling the belief that men are expected to cheat.

Take for example on twitter i see a lot of "Why Do Men Cheat?" tweets. In movies i hear a lot of "all men are dogs hunny". Now none of these expressly state that men will cheat, but the mere fact that there is bias (or inequality) one can imply that the lesson being taught here is, women should be cautious of men. WHY? What should they expect? hmmm?

Reading at article the other day entitled Ten Reasons Why Men Cheat i found a point that says men cheat because of their upbringing, they are told that having women is an image booster for them, the more they have, the more they will be respected and given a prestigious reputation. Women also learn about that lesson men are taught, they are given "the talk" about boys when they turn 13 and start to date, fathers become overly protective of their daughters sometimes even warning them about how disgusting men can be. All of this preparing the child for what could possibly happen - being cheated on.

Some sociologist say that black men are expected to cheat because of their historical background. African men were known to have many spouses and this tradition was passed down from generation to generation

Would you like to look at it in the biblical sense?

So you see, whether you like it for not, men are expected to cheat because of the gender inequalies and double standards upheld by the society.

Though saying that men are expected to cheat, Tyrese maintains that not all men cheat.

Rihanna ManDown: In Jamaica's Defense

Posted by Dervin's thoughts On 7:42 PM

Platinum recording artiste Rihanna released her long awaited video Man Down which immediately triggered a number of debates. The Parental Board in the US saying that Rihanna is teaching the wrong lesson to her younger female fans, some are wondering why she didn't do the video in her own country and Jamaicans unease because of how the video depicts Jamaica, a topic which most people shoot down by saying "it's Jamaica's reality".There hasn't really been any well laid out "defense for Jamaica" so i feel it's my duty to do so.

This ISN'Y MUCH ABOUT the opposition or dislike of Rihanna or even the video I HAVE ACCEPTED THAT THE VIDEO WAS MADE TO SET A TONE TO BLEND WITH THE CONTENT OF THE SONG, it's more so about Jamaica's image.

BEFORE I CONTINUE, i would like for anyone reading this to become neutral in mind and to try and understand where we're coming from with this. If you continue reading with the agenda of not accepting any of the points then it makes no sense you continue.

YES, THIS IS JAMAICA
Now, the perception of Jamaica that many persons around the world have is that it is an extremely violent country and all communities are slums with illegal wiring and protected by zinc fences, as you saw in Drake's video with Mavado or Welcome to Jamrock. This perception is fueled by the mainstream media who oftentimes only showcase these parts of the island and shines a bright light on the negativity.

Continuously being exposed to that side of Jamaica, it eventually becomes the main identity of the country hence the belief of many persons that Jamaica is.....just that. So if someone comes to Jamaica they feel the need to capture the imagery of what THEY BELIEVE Jamaica is. I always use this example: believing that Africa is an all black country, so if you go to Africa you only request black people to be in the video. Did you know white people live in Africa too? To be even more personal, excitement is aroused when a ghetto person (i say that with no disrespect) speaks standard English as they are expected to be vulgar by the way the are constantly portrayed or EVEN WHEN PEOPLE JUDGE YOU BY YOUR TWEETS.

Jamaica's beauty
But yes, what you see is true we do have a high crime rate we do have some slums, but we also have beautiful beaches, amazing landscapes, historical monuments and proper residential communities. The question now arises, should we continue to allow individuals to boost this image of Jamaica, just because it's "the reality"? Are you a murderer? do you live in a slum? This is the kind of behavior that breeds the view that Jamaicans are monkeys who live in trees.

Not because it exists doesn't mean we should allow it to consume who we are. CNN had an article listing the TOP COOLEST PEOPLE IN THE WORLD Jamaicans being ranked 3rd. In the article they posted the "not so cool" information about each country, what was Jamaica's 'not so cool'? "High murder rate and widespread homophobia.". Brazil was ranked number ONE and their 'not so cool' was "Mmmmm, Brazilian meat and cocoa -- so delicious, but farming's destruction of vast tracts of rainforest leaves a bitter aftertaste".

WHAT? Brazil who has a terrible murder rate? Brazil who is ranked 5th in the murders of youth; 6th overall IN THE WORLD, THAT'S ALL THEY COULD FIND? OHHH I guess that was publicized because it hasn't become their identity, but unfortunately it has become ours.

I am not blaming Rihanna for anything, if she chose to create that scene it's not her fault, it's ours for continuing to allow this to happen, but we can feel upset because that's not all Jamaica is about. Our local entertainers do it, we should be upset, International entertainers do it, we should be upset. Once it is done we should be upset. Having videos like that is not the problem it is when we overdo it.

We MUST become the CHANGE we want to SEE: Jamaicans Migrating Hinders Growth

Posted by Dervin's thoughts On 4:41 AM

These famous words of Mahatma Gandhi has never been more true. Many times we beg and plea for change within our society - whether it be social or political. But the question I ask most is what are we doing to aid in that change, to make that dream we have a reality. The answer? Not enough.

I googled "Jamaica + Third World" and like me, many persons are pondering on the question "Why is Jamaica still a third world country?". The responses are predictable and any reasonable person can answer. A poor economy, a corrupt and unreliable government and of course our devastating crime rate which earned us the title of Murder Capital of the World (nothing new though, we had the title before,i.e Port Royal).

There are hardly any jobs available and with little being done by the Jamaican government, we are given no hope that there will be any and with murderers killing our labour and threatening civilians, we migrate, become stagnant, complacent and a turnoff for foreign investors. So yes, we are still a third world country mainly because of us. We need a change in traditions.

Realistically we have to accept the fact that the change we want to see, will not be happening anytime soon because of the persons running the country. These are the murders, politicians, accountants, doctors, lawyer etc. I say this because they've been in charge for many years and nothing has changed. We are still underdeveloped.

So who should we rely on? Not the teenagers of today, but the college graduates. If you look at Jamaica's journey to first world status campaign Vision 2030, the year suggests that our graduates are the ones who we should be leaning on for this political, economic and social change. Yes of course, that's 19 years from now, the leaders of today will no longer be leaders, they'll be dependents.

In an article published in Jamaica Observer Dr. Baugh, Minister of Foreign Affairs & Foreign Trade stated "...Jamaica has lost 54,288 skilled professionals to North America alone over the past 20 years. This number represents 32 per cent of the total output of Jamaica's education system,"

So this is the route i'm taking the post, Jamaicans Migrating.  This is a trend that needs to end if we have any hopes of Jamaica surviving or developing. Understandably, in a poor economy with no jobs available and the ever growing cost of living, migrating to find work is the best choice. However don't neglect your country. When all our skilled and educated brains migrate leaving us with little human resources, the country remains stagnant. And therefore they aid in the hindering of the country that THEY want to change. Ironic?

So what should they do? they can't stay in a suffering country and become a part of the high unemployment rate, we already know what that will cause. So leave, migrate and find work, but remember to come back and SOON.

Sir Author Lewis an economist spoke of development and what we should do in order to develop. He posited the Industrialization by Invitation theory saying that we should lure foreign investors and to persuade them into setting up in our country, but it doesn't stop there. he says we should then work for them, learn, then leave and use what we learned from them to start our our businesses. The theory continues, you should familiarize yourself with it, but that's the part I'll use.

When our graduates migrate to foreign countries and get their jobs, they shouldn't stay there forever. Return to Jamaica and teach us, like Author Lewis says, what you've learnt - the international standards - and start your own business. Employment increases, GDP rises and Standard of Living soars!

Obviously this will only be if we also deal with the other factors affecting growth. But the point still stands, We Must Become the Change We Want to See

2010 and So We Conclude

Posted by Dervin's thoughts On 4:53 AM

We can all agree that 2010 was an eventful year. We experienced hammers, taxes, incursion, disguises and duppies (Kartel). So of course I had to revisit those moments of sorrow, bliss, anticipation and of course, the Oh No He Did Nots.

I along with my friend Anna came up with a list of the 13 top events that occurred in the year 2010!

We gonna kick things off with the death of Professor Barry Chavannes, an exceptional Jamaican scholar. I knew nothing about the man, so of course all my info about him will be taken from Google… there is too much information about him, and quite frankly I’m not being paid. So instead of giving you his whole life story I’ll inform you on what he was best known for.

Barry Chavannes was a Rhode Scholar, he was beloved by Rastas, he fought for the legalization of ganja, he wrote many books and was a Professor at UWI. May his soul rest in peace.

< lung cancer, how yuh get dat again?
Coming in at number 12 is the death of musical icon Gregory Isaacs whose death didn’t really matter to many because they thought he was already dead. Upon doing my research about this man, I understood that this Isaacs was a druggy. He thrived on cocaine and other supplements which would give reason to his death, lung cancer. He was best known for his song Night Nurse. I wonder if he sang that to the nurse who took care of him..hmm

At number 11 we have tax, tax and more tax.  2010 was the year of legalized extortion as the Jamaican government came one step closer in their quest to revive slavery. There I said it, I know yall were thinking it, shoot.  Just last year he was planning on taxing things like sardines and tissue and napkins and if it wasn’t for Miss Butu Portia Shrimpson who nuffed up herself as usual, we would all be suffering now. Ha! Look at me, I juss disrespected and praised Portia in one sentence, I had to though, if I was bashing Bruce, I had to bash her, writers should not seem bias. Anyways and just when we thought we were getting a break from this monetary drought caused by the JLP, they taxed liquor conveniently in time for the Christmas holidays. Good move Bruce, good move.

<Aint they cute doe

lol ok i'm trippin, i'm trippin

Christina Brown and boyfriend of Justin Beiber, Usher Raymond come in at number 10 on our countdown. At sumfest 2010 the international artistes were Chris Brown and Usher who came to show Jamaican girls how to keep dem man. Both “men” saw it appropriate to start a whining contest on the stage which resulted in Chris Brown on his head top and Usher showing him how a belly dance is really done. GURRRLLLLLLLL supm aint right.

We cannot talk about the hurricane season and not mention the infamous Tomas, which sneaks itself in the 9th spot. If you’ve never heard of a menstruating hurricane, then let me tell you about tropical depression, no tropical storm, no Hurricane, noooo tropical storm, you know what, let me tell you about Tomas. This thing had a field day with Jamaicans and as it dilly dallied trying to decide whether to visit us our not. Upon the final hours before impact, it seemed to have decided to dump some rain on the island. This resulted in a haste to get last minute supplies, few hours later Tomas passed leaving no evidence of its presence. Not even breeze. He fooled yall.

Carpenter Bounty Killer hammers his way at number 8. %50 insane and %50 dunce were possible reasons that could be used to explain bounty’s antics this passed year. He literally tried to fix his relationships by doing so the old fashion way, using a hammer. He was charged earlier this year for beating his girlfriend whom he threatened to kill in the presence of law enforcers. The charges against him were later dropped but were again rehashed as he was back in custody for beating a woman with a hammer. He was later seen worshiping Satan in a church and it was reported that he joined a movement against female abuse. Whatever Bounty is trying to sell, I aint buying.

A number of artistes certainly did their thing this year. But number 7 belongs to Gyptian! He won a Mobi award (I don’t know what that is, but ok) and a Soul Train award, but this is not about his achievements it has to do more with the remix he did to his song Hold Yuh with Nicki Minaj, who in my opinion butchered a perfectly good song. I still don’t understand her importance and what she was trying to say during her parts of the song.
“body smoking, CIGA-RATE” really Nicki? What? CIGA-RATE? And what are you trying to say really? Moving on…

this is a frame from Rihanna's Umbrella Video..the chick is evil!
Conveniently placed at number 6 is the Illuminati DVD. Get it? 6? As in 666? No? Ok nevermind. This DVD has been circulation for sometime now, and is a documentary exposing the secrets of an occult called the Illuminati. The DVD exposes the truth about the motive of the group and its member and human sacrifices. All I have to say is if this group is sooo secretive, how do you know so much? Some celebrity said to be a part of this group are Jay Z, Beyonce and Rihanna.

At #5 is the infamous List that began circulating on the web about gay Jamaican Artistes on the DL. Not much to say about this. Names that were mentioned are Kartel, Elephant man, Lexus and Kiprich which is stale news really, the name that topped the List is ZJ LIQUID AND I HAVE COMMENTARY! There was a confrontation on twitter between a boy and Zj Liquid. The boy asked Liquid whether he had heard about the allegations. Liquid said yes. So the boy asked Liquid if they were true. Liquid responded saying “I don’t really care what people have to say about me”. The boy then told Liquid that he did not answer the question, in response, Liquid blocked the boy. The question was never answered laaa geee!… I SHALL NOT LOOK. Moving right along.

<<< teach me how to DUPPY
The duppy story aired on CVM that gave Jamaicans all over goose bump comes in at number 4. The story is about a boy who is being harassed by a ghost who was his friend. The video shows the ghost pulling and pushing the boy all over the place. At one point both the boy’s feet were dangling in the air. A pastor who saw the piece, came to the rescue and demanded that the ghost torment the boy even more, of course just to see what level duppy he was working with *roll eyes*.

At number 3 is Yendi Phillips for her the wonderful performance at the Miss Universe Pageant. Amidst negative comments about her entering the Miss Universe pageant and assumptions about her weight, Yendi shown brightly as she placed 2nd in the pageant beating 82 other beautiful women.  She was placed 1st in the swimsuit section and 2nd in the evening gown segment. She has since been seen in many interviews, magazines and commercials.

In the number 2 position is Kartel’s FACE. I find this to be another controversy at the monster’s whim. He yearns for scandal and attention. He’s like the Jamaican Kanye West. And it has been working. Although he is now unbearably ugly he is getting tremendous amount of attention. His face color made it on MediaTakeOut and has been the topic of many street side vendors. De recently announced that he will be coming out with his own line of cake soap. Big up to the entire downtown massive, not that you guys are going to read this but still.
And to no surprise, in the number one spot, the biggest scandal and event in 2010 was the Tivoli Incursion, the Dudus saga, and Manatt Phelps and Phillips scandal. It all started when the US’ extradition request for Dudus followed by Bruce’s appointment of Manatt Phelps and Phillips followed by almost 80 people being killed in Tivoli and the nationwide lockdown and search for Dudus. Who was later caught in his grandmother’s wig. and we can't leave out the mediator.

Yes, 2010 was an eventful year filled with Drama and Excitement. Twas good though, we overcame a lot. Now it’s time to close the door, and open a new one. Can’t wait to see what makes the list next year!

Bitch Fest 2010

Posted by Dervin's thoughts On 11:46 PM

Yesterday Twitter was the center for the biggest celebrity clashes ever!

We’ve gotten use to celebrities going at each other twitter. Earlier this year we saw twitter beefs between Fabulous and Soulja boy, The Game and Marque Houston and 50cent and JaRule, but the biggest and juiciest one to date has got to be the clash between RnB Superstar Chris Brown and RnB has been Razb. Don’t remember who that is? Don’t worry, neither did %90 of the twitter population.

Razb was a member of the group B2K, still lost? Ugh! B2K was an all boy group, they sang Boom Boom Boom. Omarion was the leader of the group. Who’s Omarion? GOSH!!!! He’s the one who sang ICE BOX.
Still lost? Ok here are pics.

<<< is that Lip Gloss on Omarion's Lip?

.

<<-- And yall already know Chris Brown
lol I know. I'm such an ass

Anyways, back to the beef. At about 2pm yesterday afternoon RazB was at home trying to find a way get some attention. So he started tweeting about his “infatuation” with Rihanna. Then it clicked! Why not start arguing with Chris Brown?

He started tweeting about how he would never understand how people like Chris Brown would disrespect women like Rihanna. Of Course, no one knew of his ranting because he only had 20,000 followers at the time and yes surprisingly he had “Verified” beside his name. Attention was only brought to him when Chris Brown responded and Chris went HARD! Check it out!

Chris Brown's Tweets

Chris Brown in the end, stressed the fact that he is not homophobic and that his comments were not general, he wasn’t bashing the gay community as RazB was trying to imply, he was bashing RazB.

RazB's Tweets

Chris also helped RazB career. RazB followers count more than tripled moving from 22000+ to 78000+ and a music video posted on Youtube in June by RazB entourage finally got some views and comments after Chris Brown tweeted the video link.

You guys know what RaZb was referring to when he tweeted about Chris’s abusiveness. But I’m aware that many persons are lost as to what Chris was talking about. So let me give yall the scoop.

Razb released some videos of himself admitting and accusing his one time producer Chris Strokes, molested him. OMG I juss got what Chris brown meant when he said RazB has a tattoo on his back saying “Different Strokes” touché Chris, Touché.

He then later included Marques Houston, brother of Omarion, in the scandal and accused Marques of raping him as well. Ray J said that he asked Marques about the allegations and said that he  did NOT deny it. GURRRLLLL.

Wait who’s Ray J? He’s the guy that made Kim Khardasion famous, i.e. the sex tape.

And Guess WAH! I did some more research. RazB also said that Bow Wow and Lil Fizz had sexual relations.

And during the twitter trace, RazB claimed that Chris Brown is Andre Merrit’s boyfriend. Don’t know who Andre Merrit is? Neither do it.

This Is Dervin Osbourne

Posted by Dervin's thoughts On 12:51 AM

Today I decided to write about a sensitive topic to me and one that I’ve been pretty hesitant to openly speak about. It’s the matter of self esteem and self confidence.  When I asked persons what they think of me, many whether they know me personally or via the web say that I’m a confident person who is not afraid to express myself and most importantly is not moved by negative comments whatsoever. Though this may be true, this confidence did not come over night, nor was it developed in a month. Think more along the lines of 5 years

On facebook where for a sometime I was known as “the king of facebook” my statuses were very raunchy and loose. I always posted statuses that most males would never do. I would say things like “raeeeee a wah do some gyal”, things only girls do. Also, my statuses were very opinionated, often contrary to the opinions of the majority, yet I would still say it. These acts were of course what made persons believe that my confidence was through the roof, as I seemed to not care about what others had to say. The same occurred on Twitter.

In real life, I am considered the backbone to my friends. The one they would come to for help and advice, the one who cheered them up when they needed it.

At school I would always portray this image of a confident person. I would always try to have a smile on my face and shake my head at all the negativity brought before me.

All of this basically explains why persons think that way about me.  And You are correct, For my journey has ended and now I’m now proud of who I am and I closed the door on all negative comments. Why though? Why am I like this now?

As mentioned before my statuses on facebook and on twitter were very stereotyped. And so in return I was stereotyped. I was then being labeled as all sorts of things. Called names that has been with me since primary school. Being bullied over the web was one thing.

The bulk of my horror story occurred in high school. I was many times threatened, some were passive. It didn’t sink in until I was  surrounded on the street by boys holding weapons and told that I was going to be killed and a knife brought to school for me. This all happened during the Csec exams, never would have guessed huh? Only my mother I think understood the pain I went through. I hid it from everyone else. Of course! Who would want to see a confident person like Dervin show fear? This resulted in me being afraid to go to school and I didn’t, I stayed home where I was safe.

In addition that situation where my confidence was fading away, earlier in 2010, I was faced with another problem - Maintaining my self esteem. This was a big challenge for me.

I kept wondering what persons were thinking of me when I go out. That is, how I dress. Before, that was never a problem for me. I think what really made it hard for me was the fact that persons who I considered my friends were the ones saying it. Imagine your friends saying horrible stuff about you and you find out in the most inappropriate manner. No one really knew how much it bothered me as I keep my emotions suppressed as you might have grasped while reading.

I reached my breaking point earlier in February when I just gave up. I was rude to everyone and went against all rules. I yearned for attention, other than at home. I remember saying really inappropriate things on twitter just to get some attention.

You see, the Durvii you see now was not the Durvii you knew a couple of months ago. The question is how did I overcome this?

No I didn’t look to God nor did I ask him for help. I TOLD MYSELF that I wasn’t going to let negativity take control of my life. In April while I was hiding from the world. I heard my mother say something. She said “yuh cyaa mek dem tings deh make yuh lose hope”. Those weren’t her exact words, but its somewhere along that line. I laughed, and I whispered to myself, “didn’t I just say this?”

So just like that, my confidence was restored. I went to school and laughed. And this time, I wasn’t suppressing anything. I was actually laughing because I was happy. In the end, I left school with 4 ones and 2 twos.

Now on to the issue of my self esteem. I remember I was getting dressed to go to a party and I looked in the mirror and wondering if they would like what I had one then I laughed to myself and shook my head. THEY WHO? I LIKED WHAT I HAD ON, AND THAT’S ALL THAT MATTERS.

The day after someone tweeted something like “well if you didn’t look recycled garbage, maybe I wouldn’t stare at you” that person was referring to me. When I saw that, I contemplated my response, but it wasn’t worth it. Why argue over something like that? It didn’t bother me, not one bit.

Here and there I still get remarks or cheeky statements about my attire, but it doesn’t bother me. I have mastered to the art of Not Giving a Damn.

I learned to appreciate myself for who I am, my mother loves me, my family loves me, my friends love and appreciate me for me. And that’s all that matters. I’ve learned to not dwell on negativity, it’s not healthy.

Success vs Dignity...Part 1

Posted by Dervin's thoughts On 12:51 AM

No doubt one of the hottest songs released this year (2010) Long Distance Stulla by Movado was added to the artiste's list of chart topping songs of his career. The reason for this article though is not to praise Movado, well, not for his accomplishments but for some other alleged talent. (of course to display some level of professionality i had to insert the word "alleged").

A line the aforementioned song states, "...man a long distance stulla, mi nuh feed pan bulla". Well a photo released recently of a male individual, who looks very much like Movado, enjoying a well short after meal. Implying that bulla is really not on Movado's plate.
Sorry to burst your bubble, but the man seen in the photograph sadly is not Movado.

I say sadly because it would be fun to have such a scandal circulating. I'm a fan of Movado- i dont listen to his music, i just chose his side during the whole gully vs gaza battle- however because of the stigma placed on the act of oral sex, which in Jamaica which is expressly displayed in the Dancehall music and society on a whole, it would be rather satifying to know that one of the offenders of these music, is hypocritical towards himself or herself.

Lets rewind a few months back. Lisa Hyper, gained even greater success when her name was used to discribe an action, Lisa Swiper meaning blowjob. During her scandal, to be truthful i felt sorry for her, it made my open dislike of Kartel even more prominent. Like Movado, i didnt really listen to songs by Lisa Hyper, however i was told that she was also a "bunna" of the whole oral sex argument. Then my opinion changed. I still greatly disliked Kartel but I started to ridicule Lisa Swiper. She deserved the backlash she received.

It now brings me to a conclusion that Dancehall artistes strive for success by betraying themselves. They sing songs that will, although disrespecting themselves, be accepted by the general public and so will earn them top positions in the industry of music. But what happens when all of that backfires? The photo released of Lisa performing oral sex immediately ended her 5minutes of semi-fame. This was not mainly because she was doing the act, but due to the fact that she sang against it.

With all that aside, its reassuring to note that Jamaicans are showing some signs of growth. Oral sex is not so much a taboo anymore, however some citizens may still give informal sanctions to persons who do it.

PS: I called this article part one because i felt it was too short, and the title itself deals with much for than just oral sex. So maybe, no promises, i will write a part 2 and so forth.

You guys need to check out this blog, i really like it. It has a mixture of every topic, ranging from entertainment to what i think is philosophy. She also writes about the latest Hot Topics like i do.

OH HELL NAW!

Posted by Dervin's thoughts On 6:10 PM

Metrosexual: an usually urban heterosexual male given to enhancing his personal appearance by fastidious grooming, beauty treatments, and fashionable clothes
Metrosexuality is basically the word given to straight guys who dress gay, simply put. In the beginning, this type of behavior was shunned. You were informally punished by the society. You know what I’m talking about... The blank stares, the whispers, the whole works, especially in a society like the one we live in. But since recently men looking “divalicious” is what seems to be the in thing. I’m not even talking about the Skinny jeans, those have been around since forever (ask your dad how tight his jeans were in the 70s). I’m talking about men wearing Nicker jeans, what we Jamaicans call “NICKAS” and flaunting their “stuff” as if they cute nshit!
The fashion and modeling industry are the main perpetrators (it took me forever to spell that word, thanks google) of this revolution in men!
Check these out:

Are women really being exploited? Are the really the takers of men’s shit?

Posted by Dervin's thoughts On 9:16 AM

Women; an adult female person, the fairer sex, the ultimate treasure in a man’s life. The Ying to their Yang, the milk to their tea, the curry to their goat and the takers of their shit?
I recently started studying sociology, I must add that I have a profound fascination with the subject, and while studying the major sociological perspectives I stumbled upon one that I found quite entertaining.

All of us at some point must have been victims of women seeking to find a target to unleash their anger. Men however seem to bear the blunt of most attacks.  The popular complaints being how ungrateful men are, men who leave the toilet seat up, unfaithful men, men who just don’t understand how to treat a woman, the list goes on. But who would have thought that men would piss women off to the point where they would form an anti-men organization called the Feminist movement?

The purpose of this post is to see the views of the feminist and to come to a conclusion to whether they are in fact being exploited or this movement is as a result of their monthly period. There are three types of feminists: Liberal, Marxist and Radical.

The Liberal Feminists, who I believe are the most selfless ones, wants quality for all, both men and women alike. This however, can be both good and bad. They believe that there should be no gender requirements for anything, such as work.  How many times have we heard people say that men who are nurses are queer and females in construction are lesbians?

It would be great to live in a world where there is no gender tag placed on anything. But freedom goes even further. The freedom according to the Liberals would also mean the end to chivalry! This will also be the end of social roles set for both men and women. Let’s go in further detail. The liberals believe that to achieve success, women would have to say goodbye to the luscious life they live where men are told to do everything. Eg: if a guy and girl were to go on a date, they will both be required to pay their own bill even if the man was the one who asked the girl out. This also goes for opening the door, a woman has hands, she can open the door herself can’t she? Why should I, the man, open the car door then walk all the way around to open the car for this woman.  I don’t think that would be a bad thing for men.

But men? You will also be at a disadvantage. Since there will be no gender roles, you will be required to do everything that a loving wife usually does, wash your own plate, clean your own bathroom, wash your own clothes!
So you will see that if the Liberal Feminists were to have their own way, the only way to distinguish a man from a woman would not be by their actions, but by what they have in their pants.

The Marxist or Socialist Feminists believes women are takers of shit! Fran Ansley a Marxist feminist said “Women are the ‘ takers of shit’ who act like ‘a sponge soak up’ the husbands unhappiness and lack of satisfaction.”

They believe that women put up with foolishness from their husbands. The Karl Marx’s theory says that there will be a revolution by the lower class to over throw the rich, now the Marxist Feminists say that this revolution will not happen because of women. They say that when men come home from work frustrated because of his boss he takes out his frustration on his wife whether by abuse or bad sex. The women also say that they are being exploited by men. They wash, cook and clean so by right they should be paid for the work they do. I am left to wonder what world these feminists were living in. Are these women who they are being exploited naked, starving and living on the streets while their husbands are fully clothed, healthy and living in a house?  If you are a woman and you live in a house not paying rent, you’re getting food and money for clothes then in fact you are being paid! That is the major criticism of the Marxist Feminists.

The Socialists also say that women are forced to endure bad sex. The critics say that if their husbands are performing poorly then it is the fault of the women. Don’t they have mouths? Can’t they tell their husband that the sex is not good? And if he continues to perform badly then aren’t they free to leave?

Radical feminism is a philosophy emphasizing the patriarchal roots of inequality between men and women, or, more specifically, social dominance of women by men. Radical feminism views patriarchy as dividing rights, privileges and power primarily by gender, and as a result oppressing women and privileging men.

The Radical Feminists now say that women are dominated by men and no matter what, women will never be on top. And example of this would be in the workplace - a man may become a CEO and a woman can only become a manager. They also say that men are given more freedom and women are forced to abide by his freedom. They say women are forced to stay within the shadows of men. If a man is at a football match then his wife has to be there cheering in the stands, but if a woman has a netball match the man would be at home snoring his nose off. The Radicals paint a tainted picture of men, portraying them as arrogant and self centered. But women are free. They are no laws that say a woman must follow the man, why not step in front of him? If you stay in his shadow that because you want to stay in his shadow. If you didn’t want to go to that football match then you could have stayed home. Who cares if the man vex? And also, aren’t their good men out there? Is it that all Radical Feminists been only exposed the jerks?

So whats the verdict? Are women really being exploited? Are they really the takers of men’s shit?

Sweepstakes and Lottoscammers

Posted by Dervin's thoughts On 12:08 PM

No longer are these two words considered games, they are now the names given to a certain type of people!
We've all heard it on the news and some of us were even stupid enough to be victims.
A Sweepstake (i'm talking about the game now) is a promotional method, fashioned after a lottery, which provides consumers the chance to win cash, goods, trips or something of value in relation to the sweepstakes sponsor's product or service.
Now a Sweepstake (the person) is a selfish, greedy person who trick innocent (yet stupid) people into sending them money in return for a prize that will never come.

Now mek we talk bout dis!...cause a nuff a unu out deh fool bad!

Destruction of the Dancehall Music

Posted by Dervin's thoughts On 1:06 PM

The Destruction of Dancehall Music

As the Dancehall music rapidly increases the messages being sent are becoming more acknowledged. Dancehall is not all about music, to some it is a way of life, to others it may be a means on meditation and relaxation. Some listen and are influence by the words and idolize the dictators and hence are greatly influenced.
The messages that some deejays are sending to the society has surpassed intolerance. They are atrocious. The Dancehall music has lost its essence and now promotes criminal activities like murder. The writers of these frightening songs claim that their music should not be taken seriously, but just as words, this cannot be so.
Gone are the days when two men could solve their disputes by talking and expressing their upsets morally and without war.
a line taken form a song sang by two popular and idolized Dancehall artistes read. "straight "AK" and "45" dis mi an me take away yuh life". The words suggest that is would be better for one to kill a man because he was insulted than to talk about their problems. these words are vulgar and it matters not if it is intended to be taken as just words.
Dancehall artistes must realize that once they are idolized and are deemed as role models, whatever they sing, whatever message they send, someone WILL follow, hence the need for discipline without the Dancehall.

  • Disrespect towards women...
The respect for women has vanished completely. They are no long described as the fairer sex. Instead, when we hear the Dancehall music, the impression we get of Jamaican women is that they are nymphomaniacs, slack and humans of no moral character. They are referred to as "gyal" and whenever they are mentioned in a song usually, the lyricist is singing about some extremely atrocious sexual escapades. However, what surprises me is the fact the, it isn't only males who love these songs, but also females.

  • Disrespect and irreverence towards God
Gone are the days when people feared god, during a period where one would worship him and praise him every chance he got. If god were to punish Jamaican based on the Dancehall music, it would be best to advise all Jamaicans to prepare for hell. There are lyricist who disrespectfully mention him name in their dreadful music, whole at the same time denouse the name of the almightyo one example of this? "the way me Blood**** bad me nuh muss know GOD, cause SELASSI ammi fada".

The need for discipline in the Dancehall is strongly recommended. We must take heed before something goes terribly wrong within our society.

Posted by Dervin's thoughts On 4:51 PM

you remember sony ericsson? samsung? alcatel? all dem one time hot phone deh? where are they now? ppl still walking around with them?those phones are a thing of the past! lol SAD..

So whats in now?
Most defininately, the three must have brand phones out there are:

THE BLACKBERRY: that almost everybody seems to be sporting, dung to taximan and garbage man a sen on pin!

THE IPHONE: this phone is hella sexy! and its biggest competition is the blackberry of course, its against rules for the a journalist to be bias, but watev i run dis shizzzz and i say TEAM BLACKBERRY!!!

and of course the phone that has been getting an increasing number of sales at Digicel, Claro and the other one. (me cyaa even bada call the name, bcuz by next week dem change dem name again.).......
the Phone i'm talking about is the Nokia 1200 series, otherwise known as the FLASHBERRY! EL OH EL!......like seriously now, dah phone yah shot!!!!!!!!!!!!!
i advise allll business personel to get this phone, you know sometimes you may be working late at work and there's this file at the back of your desk that you want but somehow the office lighting juss cant go all the way around that side, dont worry the flashberry can solve that with its ultra bright flashlight...and also sometimes you kno you the blackberry will run out of battery like after 5mins of talk time. however the flashberry has an ultra long battery life..all two months worth of talking and yuh bars still high!. ONCE AGAIN NOKIA HAS WON THE COMPETITION WITHOUT ANY WORK!

RIM AND APPLE UNU NUH SHAME??? GOD KNO!!!

NO APOLOGIES!

Posted by Dervin's thoughts On 4:32 PM

I make no apologies for what was said in my previous post. However, i do apologize for how it was said. I was bashing promoters for their lack of acknowledgment about their image, while at the same time, I was displaying the same lack of interest.
My post was written generally, but of course towards the end, i specifically targeted a certain group. Now, let me clear this up, i wasn't targeting the group, just a specific member. Sorry for the misunderstanding. The person i am referring to, obviously has no interest in the image they portray to the public. From my research, i have noted that Sponsors pay a lot of attention to the image of the people the choose to associate with.
Watch how you carry yourself, i was always told this by the executives of Lawless Events. The boss of the group should have told that person the same thing because he shows noticeably signs of carelessness. The blog i wrote was about "tacky" promoters and this person literally lived up to what i wrote, and went as far as the publicly threaten me. Some other members of the group did it as well. This could be enough evidence to strip them of all their associates and not only that, since more that one members passed threats then therefore that "Event Planning" group is considered to be a "gang". And we know how the police deals with such groups... REAL PROMOTERS DON'T DO STUFF LIKE THAT ONLY TACKY PROMOTERS...
IDENTIFY THAT YOU ARE WRONG!....
I CALLED NO NAMES, IF YOU ARE OFFENDED, THEN YOU NEED TO GO STUDY YOUR BUSINESS ETIQUETTE.

1) the Blackberry Mongrel (lol): for ppl who desperately want a blackberry fone but only have $10,000...me personally woulda gwan save

5) the Blackberry Javelin, the javelin is a cute little fone that everybody wanted at one point, but is slowly coming out of style... i give it the same rating at the storm in that it doesnt add to a persons character

6)the Blackberry Curve 8500 series or the Gemini, hmmmm...Ppl like this phone bcuz its cheap and current, i think its following the footsteps of the previous curve series...i think its a cute little girly phone and it makes the girl look cute to me
